Designated Substance Survey (DSS) reports are legally required before any construction, demolition or restoration project can take place in Ontario.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos refers to a set of six naturally occurring fibrous minerals, found in rock formations around the world. Because asbestos fibres are strong, durable and non-combustible, they were widely used by industry, mainly in construction and friction materials up until about the late 70s.

Where Asbestos Can Be Found

Asbestos was used widely in home and building construction materials up until the early 80s – most commonly in insulation, floor and ceiling tiles and textured paints. Asbestos can be found both indoors and out; from roofs to surrounding soil.
